Civil disobedience rising across America as citizens fed up with criminal government:

To many veterans of the 1960s-era civil rights movement there is a rising angst and discourse among the populace that is eerily familiar to them.

Nearly everywhere you turn, crowds of angry Americans are gathering, no longer content to merely sit idly by and remain spectators to the cavalcade of injustices being perpetuated ad nauseum against We the People by criminal governments that have long since lost their legitimacy.

Run by an elitist ruling class, they prove daily that an elected body can trample rights the same as a sitting monarch or dictator.

The soft tyranny we endure now on a daily basis has turned scores of Americans into reluctant activists, no longer satisfied with participation in mundane “demonstrations” that prove and accomplish nothing
.

Let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.

Ford’s decision to close its car manufacturing plants in Australia in 2016 offers stark choices for the working class movement in Australia.

One is to bow to ‘market forces’ and talk platitudes about new opportunities and retraining and support for the workers and their families.

The other is to fight back, for the workers for example to occupy the plants and tool them up for socially useful production like electric cars and buses, solar plant components and wind turbines as part of a process of turning Australia into a fully renewable energy society by 2025.

The puppets of profit in the labour movement will wring their hands and cry their crocodile tears and move on to the next class collaborationist market induced disaster. They will call for summits and industry plans and more workers’ money to be thrown at the remaining car producers, Toyota and Holden.

The car companies will of course trouser the billions in loot and then do whatever their blessed market demands anyway.

i mean the communist manifesto has a line about capitalism being like a sorcerer who has conquered up dark forces beyond his ability to control or something so i’m not hugely surprised

Assata Shakur was a political activist in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. As a member of the Black Panther Party, she was targeted by the FBI under its counter-intelligence programme, COINTELPRO. She was framed for the murder of a New Jersey State Trooper and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1979 she escaped from prison and since 1985 has been in political exile in Cuba. David Yaffe spoke to her there on behalf of Fight Racism Fight Imperialism.

This is a great book. I say that not just because it’s by a hero of the struggle for liberation and revolution. Not just because it’s timely to read Assata’s own words now especially, since the U.S. government has renewed its attack on her this month, labeling her a terrorist and naming her one of the FBI’s most wanted. Not only because this latest escalation is also an attack on Cuba, where sister Assata has lived since she escaped prison and sought refuge in that revolutionary nation. All these are true and all are good reasons to read her story.

But I recommend her autobiography also for the simple reason that it’s a great book. Told in the most vivid, no-nonsense language, filled with the verve and fervor that Assata Shakur has brought to her lifetime of struggle, deeply informative and winning. This is a book to strengthen and buoy revolutionaries. It is also a book to educate and raise the consciousness of those who may not yet understand why socialist revolution is necessary. Because Assata Shakur, like most people, was once such a person—and by tracing her life, her experiences, what she witnessed, what she learned, she provides here a deeply affecting series of lessons, depicted as she herself learned them. About racism and how it’s integral to capitalism. About education and mis-education. About oppression, how to recognize it and how to fight it.

During the last election the centre-right National Party lead by multi-millionaire John Key, said it would partly privatise certain state assets if re-elected. Its main losing rival was the Labour Party, at the time lead by the uncharismatic Phil Goff, who had been one of the architects of the privitisation push in the 1980s. National has now decided to press ahead with its threat. The power company Mighty River Power is the current focus of attention, with other goodies up for grabs in the future. What will the effects of greater privatisation be? What options exist for workers in Aotearoa/New Zealand?
Aotearoa was one of the first countries where the neo-liberal brand of capitalism gained momentum during the 1980’s and 90’s. The Fourth Labour government began the process in 1984.

In terms of finance, foreign exchange controls were removed, the dollar was floated, new banks allowed and keeping inflation low became an obsession. Regarding trade, import tariffs were severely reduced or eliminated and subsidies to farmers ended. The labour market was weighted increasingly in favour of employers, with legislation such as the Employment Contracts Act (1991),which enabled strong attacks on unions, in the name of ‘flexibility’. A regressive Goods And Services Tax (GST) was introduced, with a corresponding reduction in income and company tax. The State-Owned Enterprises Act in 1986 required remaining government run assets such as Telecom and Air NZ to operate on a ‘for profit’ basis. All this so the market could be free to work its magic of bringing greater efficiency and prosperity to the country. (1)

Subsequent Labour and National administrations have sped up, slowed down or modified elements of this process, but none have reversed it. After three decades of these measures, there can be little doubt as to the effects of privatisation. Most workers have no union coverage and are left to bargain alone against employers. Many work long hours, subject to irregular shifts and job sharing in precarious positions on short-term contracts. Earlier attacks by previous governments have been extended by the present one, in the form of the 90 Day Act. This permits workers to be fired within that period without explanation and limits union access to worksites (2). Wages have not matched the higher levels of productivity squeezed out of workers (3). Welfare beneficiaries (4) are continuing to be attacked and stigmatised. One of the more recent measures for example, being the drug testing of beneficiaries. The individual beneficiary is being blamed for his/her situation rather than the failure of the system to provide meaningful jobs. GST has increased to 15% with no exemptions and basic food items are becoming hard for some working families to buy regularly. This has caused dependence on food banks (which have sometimes actually run out of stock due to high demand), private charities and extended whanau. Rents are high, especially in the main centres and many families have given up on the dream of ever owning their own homes. In short, there is very little prosperity to be seen out there, though a minority have of course benefited. A lot of people are getting by bill-to-bill, rather than living in the financial paradise held out by the neo-liberal theorists.

Iraqi officials have found three mass graves containing the bodies of about 1,000 people thought to have been executed by US soldiers during their occupation of the country.

The graves were uncovered in Iraq’s western province of al-Anbar. The remains are believed to be from victims killed by US forces during 2004 and 2005 in the city of Fallujah, located roughly 69 kilometers (43 miles) west of Baghdad.
